Crown Lengthening
Sometimes decay can form below the gumline. When this happens, it may be necessary to remove a small amount of bone and gum tissue in order to remove the decay and restore the tooth. Dr. Doner will always discuss the need for this additional procedure with you before he proceeds with making a new crown for your tooth. Crown Lengthening procedures can be done for both restorative dentistry and to improve the esthetics of your gum line. Dr. Doner has special training in the use of a Periolase dental laser. He will most often use this advanced technology to do crown lengthening.
Patients experience very minimal discomfort, if any, with this laser treatment because he can quickly and gently adjust the gum tissue level to expose more of the natural tooth surfaces so that the tooth can be restored. Sometimes Dr. Doner will perform crown lengthening to improve a patient's "gummy" smile because the teeth appear too short. The teeth may actually be the proper length but excess gum tissue may be covering these teeth. Again, by using his laser unit, Dr. Doner will remove and reshape excess gum tissue so that more of the natural tooth is visible. |
